Lighting of the Sails:
Echo (2024)

Through the fabric of dreams.

With striking, fantastical imagery, Australian artist and Archibald Prize winner Julia Gutman teams up with Pleasant Company and Lead Artist Christian J Heinrich to conjure an animated journey of self-discovery and wonder. Lighting of the Sails: Echo digitises centuries-old fabric-making techniques, transforming humble textiles that have been donated to the artist from her community into an animated epic projected daily on the Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid LIVE 2024.

Exciting Tech Stuff.

Julia Gutman’s work is richly tactile and grounded in classic handcrafted techniques. We used some new and exciting technology in order to bring it to the sails of the Opera House.

  • Cutting edge AI production workflow: Generative AI effectively became our renderer via ComfyUI, taking the data we fed in, and making it shine.

  • Custom Trained LORAs: We trained custom AI Stable Diffusion XL models based on Julia’s work. Doing so allowed us to maintain stylistic consistency as we fed our animations through the pipeline. Every pixel generated is true to the artist’s work.

  • Cloud native delivery pipeline: The volume of data we generated meant that on-site production was unwieldy an unpractical. Our animators did their work in the cloud, and we delivered via the cloud.

  • 6k 50fps Delivery: The fine, intricate detail in Julia Gutman’s work is there for everyone to see.
